Sean Morris
Senior Associate - Data Protection
"I am a dual qualified solicitor (England & Wales, Scotland) specialising in advice on data protection law compliance for businesses.”
I joined the team at Navigator in January 2022, and we merged with Higgs in February 2026.
I have been advising businesses on data protection compliance since 2017, when clients needed support preparing for introduction of the UK GDPR. I’ve advised and represented across a wide range of sectors, including charities, health care, education, retail, banking and financial services.
Typically, my work involves providing bespoke legally required documentation (ROPA, privacy notices, data protection policies) and help with internal data protection compliance audits.
In addition, we are on hand for dealing with crisis situations, such as handling data breaches, or responding to data subject access requests and dealing with complaints about data protection and/or investigations by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).
Also I deliver bespoke data protection training ‘in house’ for organisations and sector specific training for membership organisations and professional bodies (recent examples include the Scottish Council for Independent Schools (SCIS) and the UK’s Independent Schools Bursars Association (ISBA)).
Prior to this, for most of my professional career, I worked as an employment law litigator, defending Tribunal claims against businesses across the UK (including Northern Ireland). This involved successfully defending unfair dismissal, discrimination, breach of contract, and public interest disclosure claims against SMEs.
- Nowadays, my work for the most part involves having an ongoing advice relationship with businesses, instead of arriving ‘mid-crisis’ to defend a legal claim.
- There is nothing more satisfying that receiving positive feedback direct from those clients, asking me to ‘work my usual magic’ and make a vexatious complaint vanish, or sharing how a abstract concept in data protection law now ‘finally makes sense’ because it has been explained in a way that relates to their business.
- Since joining Navigator, data protection advice and support has become a service that clients want to access on a ‘subscription’ basis as they can see benefit of getting expert input before a minor issue escalates. Having demand of this service steadily increase each month has been a highlight.
- As a litigator, I’ve often worked with clients defending a claim for the first time in an Employment Tribunal. It is always ewarding to provide support in those stressful situations and have a decision in favour of a client – especially in cases where it seemed odds were stacked them.
