Amputations

Effects of Amputation

Not only does a person have to come to terms with losing a body part but they are also at risk of further complications directly linked to the loss of a limb.   These can include heart problems, blood clots, slow wound healing, pneumonia, stump and phantom limb pain and psychological symptoms.

Many people who have an amputation will experience some degree of stump pain or "phantom limb" pain. Phantom limb sensations are when a person experiences sensations that seem to be coming from the limb that has been amputated. Sometimes this is just awareness of the limb, but it can occasionally be painful.

Stump pain can have many different causes, including rubbing or sores where the stump touches a prosthetic limb. Our focus is always on securing a good fitting limb often in the private sector to reduce the risk of stump pain.

Adapting to an amputation is often challenging and our specialist amputation solicitors will ordinarily obtain evidence from an Occupational Therapist who will be able to recommend a number of aids and appliances to help make day to day tasks easier.

In addition psychological treatment is often required in order to help a person adjust to the loss of a limb.
