West Midlands law firm supports colleagues during Mental Health Awareness Week

Leading West Midlands law firm Higgs LLP marked Mental Health Awareness Week with a series of initiatives and training opportunities for its people.

Higgs LLP is committed to supporting its colleagues with a robust mental health and wellbeing strategy, including year-round access to Mental Health First Aiders who form part of the firm’s Wellness Team.

During Mental Health Awareness Week, from May 9 to May 15, Higgs increased its activities with special sessions and speakers.

Sophie Wardell, HR Director at Higgs LLP, said: “Given the pressures and demands of working in the law, the legal sector is starting to be more proactive in addressing mental ill-health concerns and we’re proud to be taking genuine, tangible steps towards a healthier workforce.

“We have a team of Mental Health First Aiders who available as the first port of call to offer non-judgmental support for anyone who is struggling.

“We were delighted to connect people during Mental Health Awareness Week, with engagement sessions about the impact of loneliness and bespoke video content outlining the range of interventions available to our people.

“We see support like this as a crucial part of being a responsible employer in today’s challenging world and are working with Business in the Community (BITC) to deliver in-house training to all of our leaders.”

Sophie added: “You can treat symptoms of mental ill-health, but I believe prevention is better than cure. That’s why training and awareness workshops like these are so important.”

As part of Mental Health Awareness Week, The Black Country Blokes visited the firm to meet with members of the Higgs’ team who recently took part in the 22-mile Bridgnorth Walk to raise money for their cause, which focuses upon male mental health and suicide prevention.

Managing Partner Nick Taylor said: “I am proud of the long-term relationships we are developing with the local community and this week’s focus upon mental health has been extremely thought-provoking.

“All this positive activity around mental health is underpinned by the firm’s Wellbeing Policy, which aims to ensure our employees always receive genuine care and support.”
