Government Announces Lifting of Restrictions for Covid-19

The Prime Minister announced during Covid-19 briefing on 21 February 2022 that all Covid-19 restrictions will be brought to an end over the coming weeks.

We have summarised the key changes to be aware of below.

From Thursday 24 February 2022:

  • Individuals who test positive for Covid-19 will no longer be legally required to self-isolate. However, people will continue to be advised to stay at home and avoid contact with others for at least five full days and then continue to follow the guidance until they have received two negative test results on consecutive days;
  • Contact tracing will end, meaning that fully-vaccinated close contacts and those under 18 will no longer be legally required to test daily for seven days, and those that are unvaccinated will no longer have to self-isolate.
  • Covid regulations for increased statutory sick pay will apply for a further month. On that basis, from 24 March, employees with Covid-19 will no longer be eligible for statutory sick pay (SSP) from day-one of their illness – with SSP only being paid on the fourth consecutive day of illness.

From 1 April 2022:

  • Free testing will end from 1 April 2022, save for those who are the most vulnerable.
  • People with Covid symptoms will be asked to exercise personal responsibility when deciding whether to stay at home.
  • Government guidance on Covid passports will end.

The above is likely to have an impact on your workplace and the current policies you have in place. On that basis, we advise that you consider whether it is now appropriate to:

  • review the current Health & Safety risk assessment you have in place;
  • review any individual risk assessments for vulnerable members of staff;
  • consider your sick pay policy;
  • consider your testing policy or approach to testing.

We will have more advice and guidance on the above in our Newsletter, which is due to be circulated next week, and our webinar on the lifting of restrictions which is scheduled to be held at 9.30am on the 16th March 2022. For further details about the webinar, please click here.
