Higgs celebrates apprentice success stories

Managing Partner Nick Taylor today praised our “talented and tenacious” apprentices.

To recognise National Apprenticeship Week, we’ve been spotlighting our Higgs LLP apprentices currently taking their first steps in the legal industry.

The nine apprentices are currently studying for various legal qualifications while learning on the job with our highly-experienced colleagues.

They are working in a wide range of teams, including Finance, Private Client, Personal Injury and Court of Protection.

Nick said: “National Apprenticeship Week has given us a great opportunity to celebrate our apprentices, in terms of the learning opportunities and new roles we are creating and what they are bringing to the firm.

“Our current apprentices are very talented and capable, bringing a range of different ideas to the team while enhancing their skillsets.

“They all have different end goals - whether that’s to become a solicitor, a qualified accountant or something else – and we’ll be with them every step of the way to help them get to where they want to be.

“We’re very proud of our record with apprentices and how we help our people develop in the industry.”

This year Higgs LLP is taking on its first Solicitor Apprentice in Latoyah Thompson.

The 30-year-old, who has experience working for the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG), will study for the Solicitor Graduate Apprenticeship (Law Essentials).

“I am extremely excited to start my journey to qualifying as a solicitor,” said Latoyah. “It’s an honour to be Higgs LLP’s first Solicitor Apprentice.”

Joseph Connolly, a 27-year-old who was a lifeguard before he started on his apprenticeship journey, said: “It was a bit of a worry stepping into a field of work of which I had limited knowledge.

“But the Higgs team has been absolutely fantastic. They’ve supported me all the way and encouraged me to take on this apprenticeship opportunity."

But not all Higgs apprentices are new faces around our Brierley Hill offices.

Zoe Beviss has been part of Higgs for 14 years having joined the firm at the age of 16 as office assistant.

Now she is halfway through a CILEx Level 3 Paralegal apprenticeship as she works towards becoming a qualified legal executive.

Zoe said: “Higgs has been brilliant for me and has always encouraged me to seek progression opportunities.

“The apprenticeship has allowed me to expand my knowledge further.”

Sophie Wardell, HR Director explains that widening access to the profession and improving employability in the Black Country is vital to the firm: “We want to be more creative in providing opportunities for people. We are a business that cares about long-term relationships and our apprenticeship programme is a fundamental part of this journey.”
