Higgs lawyer receives award for work with vulnerable clients

A Black Country lawyer has been recognised with a national accredited award for expertise in supporting older and vulnerable people.

Michelle Weaver, a Principal Associate at Higgs LLP in Brierley Hill, has received the Older Client Care in Practice (OCCP) Award, which distinguishes lawyers who provide specialist legal care and support to older and vulnerable clients, their families and carers.

It also grants full accredited membership to SFE (Solicitors for the Elderly), an independent, national organisation of professionals - such as solicitors, barristers, and chartered legal executives - committed to providing the highest quality legal advice on specialist areas, such as wills, powers of attorney and elder abuse.

Michelle, of Sutton Coldfield, received the accreditation primarily for her Court of Protection work with vulnerable clients. She also holds the Higher Rights qualification in Criminal and Civil proceedings, enabling her to represent clients in capacity matters in the High Court and Court of Protection.

Michelle can advise clients on all aspects of Court of Protection work. Michelle has extensive expertise in litigation in this area, including bringing claims on behalf of an attorney or deputy, defending claims brought against an attorney or deputy and making a variety of applications that need approval of the Court.

To achieve the OCCP award, all applicants are required to undertake an assessment to demonstrate good understanding of the specific needs and considerations required when safeguarding and protecting clients’ interests.

Michelle said: “I am proud to receive this accreditation, which follows two exams to demonstrate that I am fully aware of the processes required to protect the interests of vulnerable people.

“In every Court of Protection case the protected party’s best interests must be considered, and this proves I know how to adhere to that requirement.

“I am sure this accreditation will demonstrate the high level of knowledge of and commitment of team members and continue to bolster Higgs’ reputation within this field.”

The Higgs Court of Protection team has continued to expand and today consists of nine highly motivated team members.

Michelle added: “Unlike many firms, we specialise in this area and we know it inside out. It’s not something that we dip in and out of and we are incredibly passionate about the work that we do.

“This is an area and a service that we want to develop and expand in the years to come.”

Lakshmi Turner, Chief Executive of SFE,said:“We recommend people always use specialist legal advice when planning for later life, and SFE is the gold standard for solicitors and chartered legal executives advising on older client law.

“The OCCP Award ensures lawyers provide the best advice to older people and their families, guiding them through the different legal processes sensitively.”
