Higgs welcomes four new trainees

Working with trainees and developing new talent is an important part of the Higgs recruitment strategy.

We believe in providing the best training possible to motivate our people and enable them to achieve their potential.

Today we celebrate the eagerly awaited arrival of the next cohort of first-year trainees to the Higgs family.

Of course, things will be slightly different for the new members of our  team as employees continue to work from their homes rather than the firms head office, but Higgs is determined to ensure the training and support our new Trainees receive is second to none.

The four new faces joining the firm will be Taylor Love, Jonny Jones, Richard Freeman and Jodie Johnson.

Taylor said she had searched for a law firm with a track-record of developing its people.

“Higgs is highly regarded in the West Midlands and, combined with its people-led approach to business, I feel like I have found the firm for me,” she said.

“I was searching for a firm that would stretch and challenge me professionally. Having spoken with existing trainees, I was impressed by the scope of work they were being asked to complete, which seemed much wider and varied than other firms.”

Jonny was also drawn to Higgs by its reputation within the West Midlands.

He added: “I was searching for a regional firm which was both energetic and innovative in its approach to delivering legal guidance and solutions to their clients.

“I believe my skills can be harnessed and tutored to a high level in order for my own legal career to grow.”

Richard discovered Higgs at a law fair at BBP University in Birmingham, where he said the Trainees he spoke with were “easily the most approachable and down to earth”.

The Wolverhampton local believes the firm strikes a good balance between its culture and quality of work and added: “It’s important to me that I train at a firm that will not only provide me with the best experience I need to start my career as a solicitor, but also in one that I will feel comfortable doing so.”

Jodie, meanwhile, is looking forward to the variety on offer at a multi-discipline firm dealing with everything from Personal Injury to Dispute Resolution.

She said: “I really liked the fact that Higgs is a one stop shop, meaning that you are always working with other departments and have a real variety of work.

“It appealed to me that, as part of your training contract, you can get experience in a wide range of areas in both personal and business services.

“Also, it was hard to miss the work that Higgs does for the local community and various charities, and it was something that I wished to get involved in.”

Cherry Elliott, Training Principle at Higgs, welcomed the four trainees to the firm.

She said: “Whilst it is a challenging time to join as we continue to work remotely it is also an incredibly exciting time.

“The firm continues to go from strength to strength embracing new technologies and inn ovation to ensure we equip our people to work effectively and deliver excellent client service.

“We always want our trainees to have the best experience possible during their training contract undertaking a wide variety of work and being a vital part of each team they join.  I am delighted to welcome Taylor, Richard, Jodie and Jonny to the Higgs family.”

Higgs currently has six second-year trainees on its books: Laura Hackett, Victoria Boucher, Elizabeth Owen, Jagdeep Lall, Lucy Williams and Charlotte Tsang.

Despite the challenges of the pandemic, all six have progressed well during their first 12 months.

Laura said the firm had been “extraordinary in its support and flexible attitude to training”.

“They are actively and intentionally innovative, seeking out new ways to ensure we have had the best experience possible, not just under the current circumstances, but regardless of the challenges we have been faced with,” she said.

“I feel that I am considered as an individual as well as part of the trainee cohort and I have no doubt that this personal support will continue past my qualification and throughout my early career.”

Victoria said her experience had been very “hands-on” and she had the opportunity to get involved in a variety of matters, as well as the firm’s charity initiatives.

“From the moment I joined Higgs, I have felt really supported in my role as a trainee solicitor,” Victoria said.

“I feel that the firm has really taken an interest in providing high quality training to ensure that I fulfil my potential.”

Elizabeth admitted some nerves about starting her new career in law – but she needn’t have worried.

“Higgs is an incredibly welcoming place,” she said. “One of the nicest things about training at Higgs is everyone is free to be themselves.”

Despite disruption to the Family Courts, Jagdeep has drafted divorce petitions for clients, attended strategy meetings with counsel before hearings and still had the opportunity to attend court hearings remotely.

He said: “Despite having to spend the majority of this seat working remotely due to Covid-19, regular Zoom meetings with my colleagues has helped me to feel like a fully integrated and valued member of the team.”

Lucy is looking forward to joining the Corporate team at the start of March having enjoyed her first year which has seen her experience everything from working on complicated files, organising fundraising initiatives, playing sport and attending networking events with the Birmingham Trainee Solicitors Society.

“I’ve met some great people along the way,” she said. “Joining the firm was made easy by the warm welcome we received and the friendliness of the people that work here.”

Charlotte has held two seats so far within the Property and Dispute Resolution departments.

She has enjoyed gaining experience working on a diverse range of matters and having the chance to learn from colleagues at varying levels of seniority.

Charlotte added: “Higgs has also supported my development as a well-rounded lawyer outside work as Treasurer of the Birmingham Trainee Solicitors’ Society and as a member of the Wolverhampton & Black Country Junior Lawyers Division.”
