Law firm extends charity partnership

Leading law firm Higgs & Sons will break new ground with its charity fundraising for 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Brierley Hill based firm traditionally selects a different charity partner to support each year.

However, with fundraising heavily restricted by the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, Higgs & Sons will continue to support its existing charity – Teenage Cancer Trust – in 2021.

Despite the restrictions, Higgs & Sons still managed to raise more than £5,500 for Teenage Cancer Trust last year.

That money was raised by special events for colleagues and their families – including a Halloween pumpkin carving competition, a photography contest and the creation of a charity cook book – while many clients and corporate partners due to take part in a charity football tournament made a donation despite the event being cancelled.

Tim Jones, partner and head of the corporate social responsibility programme at Higgs & Sons, said: “2020 was an incredibly tough year for everyone but the charity sector was amongst the hardest hit.

“Our fundraising programme was decimated and we were only able to raise a fraction of our normal amount. However, we were proud to raise £5,500 given the very difficult situation we were living in and we thank everyone who contributed.

“Teenage Cancer Trust was voted for by our colleagues at the start of 2020 and our charity committee had no hesitation in recommending that it remains as our nominated charity for another 12 months given the circumstances.

“Hopefully we will be in a position to stage many, if not all, of our normal events in 2021 and we can put all our efforts into raising as much money as possible for Teenage Cancer Trust.”

Teenage Cancer Trust is the only UK charity dedicated to providing young people who have received a diagnosis of cancer with specialised nursing care and support.

Grace Higgins, Senior Relationship Manager at Teenage Cancer Trust, said: “Every day, seven young people in the UK aged 13 to 24 hear the devastating words ‘you have cancer’.

“Teenage Cancer Trust’s special hospital wards, nurses and youth support teams are there to provide them with the emotional and practical support they need to get them and their families through some unimaginably hard times.

“But everything our frontline team does is dependent on donations and the COVID-19 outbreak has seen our charity take a huge financial hit.

“That’s why we’re so thankful to Higgs & Sons for the incredible donation and choosing our charity to benefit again in 2021.

“At this difficult time, this support means so much.”

Higgs & Sons works across a wide spectrum of law, including business services, clinical negligence, family, property and personal injury.
